Dr. John Dunn, Biography

Dr Dunn was the lead in Mental Skills Education in the inaugral year (Fall/Winter 2014 - 15) of the Junior Pandas Soccer Program.

Has been a full-time member of the academic staff in the Faculty of P.E. and Rec. at the University of Alberta (U of A) since 1998, where he holds the rank of Professor.

Teaches sport psychology classes to undergrad and graduate students at the U of A.

Is a master course conductor (Level 5) in the area of sport psychology for the National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP).

Was involved in writing the mental training section of the Long Term Athlete Development (LTAD) model for the sport of biathlon.

Has attended two Winter Olympic Games as a member of the Canadian Olympic Team mental training support staff (Torino, 2006; Vancouver, 2010).

Has worked with many international level athletes from multiple sports, a number of whom have won gold medals at World Championships.

Has given numerous invited talks on mental training and performance psychology to elite sport-performance organizations including Own The Podium (OTP), the Canadian Olympic Committee (COC), and the Canadian Winter Sport Institute (WinSport).

Holds soccer coaching qualifications from the English Football Association and the Canadian Soccer Association (C-License: NCCP Levels 1, 2, and 3: theory, technical, and practical).

Played 3 years for the U of A Golden Bears soccer team (1989, 1991, 1993) and captained the team in his final year. Was nominated as a Canada West (CIS) 2nd Team All Star during his time with the Bears.

Is a proud owner of a U of A “Block A” sweater.

Co-coached the Edmonton Drillers (Raiders) girls youth soccer team (U-10 to U-18) for 8 years. During his time with the team, the team won 14 tournament titles (7 tournament runners up), 10 league titles (3 league runners up), and 9 provincial medals (1 gold, 6 silver, 2 bronze). While being co-coached by Dr. Dunn, one player represented the U-17 Canadian National Team and six other players represented various Alberta Soccer Association provincial teams.

Dr. Dunn is currently recognized as one of the world’s leading research experts on the topic of perfectionism in sport.
